Adopted from the 13th Age RPG, this mechanic is designed speed up combat. At the beginning of the second round, the escalation die (a large d6) is places on the table, set to 1. In each subsequent round, the die “ticks” up by one, to its maximum of 6. The value displayed by the escalation die represents an additional bonus the player characters receive to their attack rolls. This bonus is primarily utilized by the player characters, although some important non-player characters will make use of the escalation die as well.
